Siva\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is the Entirety, the Absolute Consciousness,\u00a0Trimurti<\/i>\u00a0 of Creation, Sustenance and Dissolution, also\u00a0Trimurti<\/i>\u00a0 of\u00a0Sattva<\/i>,\u00a0Raja\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Tama<\/i>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is a confluence of two syllables, ‘Si<\/i>‘ and ‘Va<\/i>‘ implying ‘redeemer of evils’ and ’emancipator from agonies’.\u00a0 According to\u00a0Sivopanisad<\/i>, He is the subtlest, minutest of all, entire existence. Along with\u00a0Sakti<\/i>,\u00a0Siva \u00a0<\/i>is a synthesis of renunciation, detachment and selfless indulgence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

From\u00a0Sruti<\/i>-s and\u00a0Smriti-<\/i>s, first meaning of\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is ‘welfare \/ benediction’. “Sivamastu<\/i>” means “Kalyanamastu<\/i>” i.e. may you be blessed. He is said to serve all life forms with five countenances, two on left as\u00a0Vamadeva<\/i>\u00a0 and\u00a0Kalagni<\/i>; two on the right as\u00a0Daksinesvara\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Isana<\/i>\u00a0 and one in the centre as\u00a0Kalyanasundarama<\/i>. Second meaning is His cognition when in zenith of His existence. Third meaning is\u00a0Sadasiva<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Daksinamurti Stotrama\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0describes Him as a sprightly\u00a0Guru<\/i>, facing southward, precepting His disciples in\u00a0Jnana Mudra<\/i>.\u00a0Lingastakama\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0recites glories of\u00a0Advaita Linga<\/i>,\u00a0Siva Mahimna Strotrama<\/i>\u00a0 describes Him as the Truth perceptible through\u00a0Dhyana\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0alone.\u00a0Yajurveda<\/i>\u00a0 describes Him as\u00a0Mahadeva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. the Master Deity.\u00a0Pancaksara Mantra\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e.\u00a0OM NAMAH SIVAYA<\/i>\u00a0 is an eternal chant propitiating the inscrutable through gross means.\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is an embodiment of asceticism of the highest order. Rudra\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in Him wanders around liberating men from incarceration of\u00a0Maya<\/i>\u00a0 and Bholenatha\u00a0 <\/i>in Him blesses all without any reservations. From\u00a0Lallesvari\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in Kashmir to Karaikal Ammiyar \/ Nayanars of Tamil Nadu, from\u00a0Swami Vivekananda<\/i>\u00a0 who had His vision in\u00a0Amarnathji<\/i>\u00a0 and\u00a0Kasi Visvanathji \u00a0<\/i>to\u00a0Ramana Maharsi\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0who discovered Him at\u00a0Arunacala\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in Tiruvannamalai,\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0subjugates all. His\u00a0Trisula<\/i>\u00a0 represents three\u00a0Guna<\/i>-s of\u00a0Sattva<\/i>, Raja <\/i>\u00a0and Tama \u00a0<\/i>being held under His command. Original cosmic\u00a0Lingama<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0is believed to be located at Chidambarama<\/i>\u00a0 as an ellipsoidal\u00a0Linga\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0around which entire cosmos revolves. When\u00a0Maharsi<\/i>-s\u00a0Vyaghrapada\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Patanjali<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0prayed for boon to behold the cosmic dance,\u00a0Bhagavana Siva<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0descended to perform the dance.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Bhagavana Siva\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is the most mysterious of the Trinity, has infinite\u00a0Upadhi<\/i>-s and manifests. Some of the prominent ones are as under \u2013<\/b><\/p>\n

Daksinesvara<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0He showers\u00a0Daksina \u00a0<\/i>i.e. benediction on all creatures,\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Isana<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 Cares for all\u00a0Jiva<\/i>-s,\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Kalyanasundarama<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 The central one promotes benediction unto all, controls two roles of\u00a0Vamadeva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Kalagni<\/i>,<\/b><\/p>\n

Vamadeva<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0He is\u00a0Rudra\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. one who teaches others by shedding their tears,<\/b><\/p>\n

Phallos<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Linga\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0like structure in Greece, derived from the\u00a0Samskrita<\/i>\u00a0 word\u00a0Phalesa\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0which means provider of all boons, worshipped on the darkest night i.e.\u00a0Amavasya<\/i>\u00a0 as in our country,<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Phallic \u00a0<\/i><\/b>Symbols \u00a0adored in Java, Sumatra, Rome, Germany, Egypt, France, Syria, America, Brazil, aboriginal Australia and Sumerian valley,<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Fudo Myoo \u00a0<\/i><\/b>is revered in Japan as a mountain hermit who grants boons. He has long coiled tresses resting on his left shoulder.\u00a0Fudo Myoo\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is ringed by\u00a0Agni \u00a0<\/i>as with\u00a0Nataraja<\/i>. Sporting a trident, entwined by a dragon spewing fire, he looks like a serpent-coiled\u00a0Siva<\/i>. Flames spiralling upward, denote heat and energy\u00a0representing\u00a0Kundalini<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Bhismapitamaha \u00a0<\/i><\/b>responded to\u00a0Yudhisthira\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0when asked to describe\u00a0Bhagavana Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0by saying, “No less a person than\u00a0Sri<\/i>\u00a0Krsna<\/i>\u00a0 or\u00a0Bhagavana<\/i>\u00a0Visnu \u00a0<\/i>can describe greatness of\u00a0Bhagavana Siva<\/i>.”<\/b><\/p>\n

Sri Krsna\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0when requested to do so, responded by saying that it is impossible to describe all qualities of\u00a0Bhagavana Siva<\/i>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Ardhanarisvara\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is one of his several manifests wherein He manifests Himself in such a way that His left half is female form while right half is male form. Female half is the representation of\u00a0Sakti\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in the name of\u00a0Parwati \u00a0<\/i>while the right half is\u00a0Siva<\/i>. If\u00a0Parwati\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is the cause of excitation of\u00a0Kama\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. desires,\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is the destroyer of\u00a0Kamadeva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e.\u00a0Deva \u00a0<\/i>of desires. If\u00a0Parwati \u00a0<\/i>creates phenomenal world through her cosmic dance known as\u00a0Lasya\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0wherein various love-postures are expressed,\u00a0Siva \u00a0<\/i>destroys it through His cosmic dance of\u00a0Tandava,\u00a0<\/i>dance of primordial dissolution and creation allegorical of vigorously moving sub-atomic particles.\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is pervaded by the power of\u00a0Parwati<\/i>\u00a0 while\u00a0Parwati<\/i>\u00a0 is pervaded by the power of\u00a0Siva<\/i>. So the manifest of\u00a0Ardhanarisvara \u00a0<\/i>is an integrated composite of opposites complementary to each other, into one cosmic entity. Representation of\u00a0Ardhanarisvara \u00a0<\/i>through an idol or picture is a metaphor confirming the Entirety being\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 and\u00a0Sakti \u00a0<\/i>both, simultaneously.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Siva\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Sakti<\/i>\u00a0 also denote an integrate of\u00a0Jnana \u00a0<\/i>i.e.\u00a0Cetana \u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Kriya<\/i>. These two are the two fundamental constituents of existence, eternally existing together and anyone of them being worthless without the other.\u00a0Cetana<\/i>\u00a0 without\u00a0Kriya\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is redundant while\u00a0Kriya \u00a0<\/i>without\u00a0Cetana\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is unrestrained and unenlightened. Wave in water is water as well as wave both, concurrently. Existence of water is represented by it’s waves i.e. it’s dynamism. No existence worth it’s salt can exist without dynamism.\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 and\u00a0Sakti \u00a0<\/i>together make Universal Deity.<\/b> Without\u00a0Sakti<\/i>, Siva<\/i>\u00a0 is\u00a0Sava\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. corpse. Without\u00a0Sakti<\/i>,\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is unable to ascertain His own existence !! Through\u00a0Sakti<\/i>\u00a0 alone,\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0remains eternally conscious of what He happens to be. Translated into social dynamics,\u00a0Nari\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. woman is adorable in\u00a0Sanatana\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0culture, enjoys absolutely an equal status and privileges. Relationship between man and woman is like\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 and\u00a0Sakti<\/i>. Man is incomplete without woman and woman is incomplete without man.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Cosmic dance of\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 as\u00a0Nataraja\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0is of utmost significance. At Chidambarama<\/i>\u00a0 in Tamil Nadu,\u00a0Siva \u00a0<\/i>is depicted as performing\u00a0Ananda-Tandavama<\/i>\u00a0 i.e. ecstasy-dance. Balanced on one foot with a faint smile hovering on His lips, declares that life must be encountered courageously within confines of moral-spiritual values. His body is the central axis balancing His outstretched arms carrying symbols of creation and destruction.\u00a0Damru<\/i>\u00a0 is the symbol of creation and\u00a0Agni<\/i>, symbol of dissolution. Human existence swings consistently between these two extremes.\u00a0Nataraja<\/i>\u00a0 symbolises the axiom that change is eternal and the very definition of existence. Creation provides seeds of destruction and destruction provides seeds of creation. This cosmic cycle must be undergone with resolute equanimity.\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0holds one hand in\u00a0Abhaya-Mudra\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0i.e. posture of benediction and protection, both at the threshold and vortex of ultimate salvation. His other hand intriguingly points to His raised left foot with the big toe pointing towards\u00a0Akasa\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0symbolising\u00a0Moksa<\/i>, sole objective of human incarnation. Other foot subjugates a dwarf symbolising egoism that must be restrained and harnessed to attain universality. It also symbolises darkness that\u00a0Nataraja\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0keeps at bay through His glorious splendour represented by the luminous arch of entire cosmos that encircles Him. Matted hair of\u00a0Siva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0represent complexities of gross existence continuously purified by the stream of\u00a0Ganga<\/i>. Sanctity and morality dissolve even the worst of troubles. He appears absolutely serene and calm. His Third Eye represents inner ocean of wisdom when closed. It is opened only on intense provocation inviting catastrophe of cataclysmic dimensions.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Sivapurana<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 mentions\u00a0Jyotirlinga<\/i>\u00a0 i.e. oval flame form of\u00a0Siva<\/i>.\u00a0Jyotih\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0means effulgence of\u00a0Agni<\/i>\u00a0 i.e. fire.\u00a0Linga<\/i>\u00a0 signifies mark, symbol of an entity that has two phonetic parts, Lin\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0Laya\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Gama<\/i>\u00a0 or\u00a0Agamana\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0respectively referring to the process of destruction and creation that\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 epitomises. By worshipping\u00a0Linga<\/i>, we are indeed worshipping entire cosmos as an embodiment of sanctity and divine consciousness. Scientists too, have described the shape of universe as ellipsoidal.\u00a0Siva<\/i>\u00a0 is effulgent and\u00a0Trigunatita<\/i>\u00a0 i.e. having transcended\u00a0Sattva<\/i>, Raja\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Tama<\/i>. With\u00a0Rajas\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in the manifest of\u00a0Brahma<\/i>, He creates. With\u00a0Sattva\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in the form of\u00a0Visnu<\/i>, He preserves and with\u00a0Tama\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0in the manifest of\u00a0Rudra<\/i>, he destroys. When the universe is seeped in the darkness of delusion,\u00a0Siva \u00a0<\/i>appears in the manifest of\u00a0Jyotirlinga<\/i>. He dwells in the supreme abode of divine illumination and absolute tranquility called\u00a0Param Dhama \u00a0<\/i>located amid sixth element of sacred effulgence far beyond the gross universe. His divine consciousness revealed through\u00a0Brahma<\/i>, imparts insight to perceive the Self and other beings as\u00a0Atma<\/i>\u00a0 i.e. tiny conscient point of divine effulgence in forehead and to experience it’s innate and original qualities of sanctity, serenity, love, bliss, wisdom and divine faculties. When we meditate on\u00a0Siva<\/i>, we weed out negative, vicarious traits, habits, leanings as they are not only sublimated in the subtle fire of divine communion but also be substituted with natural pure, positive and benevolent qualities and proclivities.\u00a0Sravana \u00a0<\/i>is the holy month dedicated unto worshipping of\u00a0Siva<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
