I have called him a modern-day Hitler and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have always said that Godhra shall remain an enduring blemish not\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 just on him \u00a0but on India\u2019s political class. I still believe\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that what happened in Gujarat \u00a0during the Godhra riots is\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 something we as a nation will pay a heavy price for. \u00a0But the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fact is that time has moved on.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4518\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4517\">As has\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Narendra Modi. He is not the only \u00a0politician in India who has\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 been accused of communalism. It is strange that the whole country\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 venerates the Congress Party as the secular \u00a0messiah but it was\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that party that presided over the riots in 1984 in which over\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a03,500 Sikhs died: thrice the number killed in\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gujarat.\u00a0 The fact of the \u00a0matter is that there is no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 better performer than Narendra Modi in India\u2019s \u00a0political\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 structure. Three weeks ago, I had gone to Ahmedabad to address the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 YPO \u00a0and I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with Modi. I called him \u00a0the evening before and I was given an\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 appointment for the very day I was getting \u00a0into Ahmedabad. And\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it was not some official meeting but instead one at his \u00a0house.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As frugal as the man Modi is. And this is something that the Gandhis\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and Mayawatis need to learn \u00a0from Modi.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>There were\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no fawning staff members; no secretaries running around; \u00a0no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hangers on\u2026just the two of us with one servant who was there serving\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 tea. And \u00a0what was most impressive was the passion which Modi\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 exuded. The passion for development; the passion for an invigorated\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Gujarat; the passion for the uplifting the living standards of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the people in his \u00a0state and the joy with which he recounted\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 simple yet memorable \u00a0data-points.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>For\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 instance, almost all of the milk \u00a0consumed in Singapore is\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 supplied by Gujarat; or for that matter all the \u00a0tomatoes that\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are eaten in Afghanistan are produced in Gujarat or the potatoes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0that Canadians gorge on are all farmed in Gujarat. But it was\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 industry \u00a0that was equally close to his heart.\u00a0 It was\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 almost like a child, that \u00a0 he rushed and got a coffee table\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 book on GIFT: the proposed Gujarat Industrial City that will\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0come up on the banks of the Sabarmarti: something that will\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 put the Dubais and \u00a0the Hong Kongs of this world to shame. And\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 while on the Sabarmati, it is Modi \u00a0who has created the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 inter-linking of rivers so that now the Sabarmati is no \u00a0longer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dry.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4501\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patriotsforumindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Ahmedabad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2290\" alt=\"Ahmedabad\" src=\"https:\/\/patriotsforumindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Ahmedabad.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patriotsforumindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Ahmedabad.jpg 500w, https:\/\/patriotsforumindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Ahmedabad-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4500\">He then\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 spoke about how he was \u00a0very keen that Ratan Tata sets up the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nano plant in Gujarat: he told me how he had related the story of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Parsi \u00a0Navsari priests to Ratan and how touched Ratan was:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the story is, when the \u00a0Navsari priests, (the first Parsis)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 landed in Gujarat, the ruler of Gujarat sent \u00a0them a glass of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 milk, full to the brim and said, there was no place for them:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0the priests added some sugar to the milk and sent it back\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 saying that they would \u00a0integrate beautifully with the locals\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and would only add value to the state. Narendra Modi is clearly a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 man in \u00a0a hurry and he has every reason to be. There is no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 question in any one\u2019s mind \u00a0that he is the trump card for the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BJP after Advani and Modi realises that. \u00a0People like Rajnath\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Singh are simply weak irritants I would imagine. He also\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0believes that the country has no apolitical strategy to\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 counter terrorism and in \u00a0fact he told me how he had alerted\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the \u00a0NSA about the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 impending bomb blasts in Delhi and they did not take him\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0seriously.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4460\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1371194538889_4459\">And then\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the September 13 blasts happened! It was this resolve of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Modi\u2019s that I found very admirable. There is a clear\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 intolerance of terrorism \u00a0and terrorists which is evident in\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the way the man functions; now there are many \u00a0cynics who call\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 it minority-bashing but the truth of the matter is that Modi\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0genuinely means business as far as law and order is\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 concerned.\u00a0 I left Modi\u2019s house deeply \u00a0impressed with\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the man as Chief Minister: he was clearly passionate and what\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0more deeply committed. When I sat in the car, I asked my\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 driver what he \u00a0thought of Modi and his simple reply was Modi\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is God. Before him, there was nothing. No \u00a0roads, no power, no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 infrastructure. Today, Gujarat is a power surplus state.
