Yesteryears Great Editor has a colourful personae and mysterious past. Historically the secularist chatterati always had a short memory and somewhat purblind vision.\u00a0 It is surprising how the Indian media and charmed glitterati of\u00a0 the 2013 THINK festival could not decode the mystery of Tejpal\u2019s invite to Mullah Abdul\u00a0 Saeed\u00a0 of Taliban to Goa for being counted among the galaxy of global intellectuals. According to the Raisina Hill buzz, the Great Editor worked overtime to get the clearance of intelligence agencies for the necessary visa for \u00a0ensuring\u00a0 presence \u00a0of the great Mullah of Taliban at THINK-2013. \u00a0No one knows whether the city grapevine of\u00a0 Tarun Tejpal\u2019s\u00a0 intimate proximity to Mullah Zaeef is a town gossip or \u00a0ground reality.<\/p>\n
Mullah Zaeef is a notorious misogynist believing in stoning\u00a0 of\u00a0 women, as prescribed in shariah.\u00a0\u00a0 Tarun Tejpal is a twice-sworn secularist.\u00a0 What is the connection between the two fundamentalists, one a hard boiled Islamist and the other a self-annointed secularist ?\u00a0 This\u00a0 question has often bothered me and some of my friends.\u00a0 A\u00a0 friend of mine is convinced that thereby hangs a shadowy tale.<\/p>\n
In August\u00a0 2008\u00a0 the so-called\u00a0 Great Editor\u00a0 had carried out\u00a0 a sustained campaign, bordering on secular morbidity,\u00a0 in\u00a0 defence of\u00a0 the\u00a0 banned jihadi terrorist outfit, SIMI\u00a0 (Students\u00a0 Islamic Movement\u00a0 of\u00a0 India) which had\u00a0 by then\u00a0 already\u00a0 morphed into the\u00a0 notorious\u00a0 kaffir-killer outfit,\u00a0 the\u00a0 Indian Mujahideen.\u00a0 Being a well informed journalist Tejpal\u00a0 could not be ignorant of the fact that barely \u00a0a few months ago in November,2007, a menacing e-mail had been circulated to media\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 radical outfit, Indian Mujahideen\u00a0 in\u00a0 proclaiming,\u00a0 \u201cThe\u00a0 war\u00a0 of\u00a0 civilization between\u00a0 the Muslims and the infidels<\/i> has begun in Indian territory.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Surely the Great Editor could not be unaware\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 following\u00a0 important<\/p>\n
facts about SIMI published\u00a0 from time to time in\u00a0 newspapers and journals and readily available in public domain :<\/p>\n
i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The outfit was commissioned in Aligarh Muslim University on April 28,<\/p>\n
1977, in Aligarh University and named the Students Islamic. Its avowed goal is to establish Muslim rule in India.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Before it was banned,\u00a0 the logo of\u00a0 SIMI\u00a0 flaunted a very intimidatory logo depicting\u00a0 a copy of the Quran spread\u00a0\u00a0 across the globe and two AK-47s\u00a0 placed astride the holy book\u00a0 for waging jihad against infidels.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That the single-minded goal of SIMI is to transform India into Dar-ul-Islam either by concerting everyone to Islam, and if necessary by waging Islam\u2019s holy war for achieving its cherished goal.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SIMI does not believe in the concept of nation State, nor does it subscribe to secularism. It wants to establish an Islamic caliphate across India\u00a0 cast in the mould of Nizam-e-Mustafa.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Every Indian journalist knows that the most frequently flaunted slogan\u00a0 of\u00a0 SIMI\u00a0 has been, \u201cAllah is our Lord, the Qur\u2019an is our constitution, Muhammad is our leader, Jihad is\u00a0 our way and Shahada is our<\/i> desire\u201d.<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0 In addition, SIMI has always praised\u00a0 the Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden is an outstanding example of a true Mujahid, who has undertaken Jihad\u00a0 on behalf of\u00a0 the ‘Ummah’.<\/p>\n
According to Yoginder Sikand, a\u00a0 well known scholar\u00a0 of Islam,\u00a0 SIMI\u00a0 considers \u2018Nationalism\u2019\u00a0 as a false idol devised by the non-Muslim enemies of the faith. All non-Muslims are branded by SIMI as ‘kafirs’, and no distinction is made among them. Because of the Quranic belief that the enemies of Allah are likely to offer stiff resistance to Islam, SIMI \u00a0has been openly preaching that\u00a0 violent Jihad needs to be waged against kaffirs of India (read the Hindus).<\/p>\n
Despite all these facts known to even a \u2018cub -journalist\u2019\u00a0 Tarun Tejpal\u00a0 \u00a0had the cheek to launch a vigorous campaign to defend SIMI in August, 2008, by publishing as \u00a0many as seventeen articles vociferously defending the radical outfit \u00a0in his liberal-left \u00a0magazine, Tehelka<\/i>.\u00a0 To quote Tejpal, a three month long investigation by Tehelka\u2019s<\/i> Editor-at-Large, Ajit Sahi, had revealed \u201ca chilling and systematic witch-hunt against innocent Muslims\u201d.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0 following pearls of wisdom incorporated \u00a0by the renowned secularist<\/p>\n
in his articletitled \u00a0\u2018The Thin Red Line\u2019, revealed his \u00a0unwavering \u00a0commitment to<\/p>\n
the cause of jihadis operating under the umbrella of SIMI and Indian Mujahideen:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Indian state must \u00a0tread carefully.The individual tragedies point to a wider psychosis. For the last many years \u2013 abetted by global trends \u2013 the state\u2019s actions seem to be deepening a prejudice against Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his highly laboured brief for SIMI the Great Editor \u00a0pontificated that \u201cnot just the\u00a0 policing and the intelligence agencies that are to blame\u00a0 – even the judicial process is often complicit in the miscarriage of justice\u201d.<\/p>\n
In those days of booming bomb blasts\u00a0 Tejpal published under the heading, \u2018the SIMI fictions\u2019 \u00a0the following pro-Islamist essays \u00a0packed with caustic diatribes against the police and the \u00a0government:<\/p>\n
Even a cursory reading of the above mentioned seventeen articles reveals how dear have been the Islamist Jihadis to the bleeding heart liberal, Tarun Tejpal. The \u00a0following narrative of \u00a0the advocacy for SIMI\u00a0 lays bare the secret story of \u00a0invitation to Mullah Zaeef and his fast-tracked visa for joining the jamboree of\u00a0 high profile intellectuals during Think-2013 event.<\/p>\n
The wonder of wonders, however,\u00a0 was that Great Editor \u00a0went ballistics to defend SIMI barely a few weeks after the Indian Mujahideen had killed and incapacitated scores of innocents in serial bomb blasts in Bangalore, Jaipur and Ahmedabad in July, 2008.\u00a0 Another highly provocative and intimidatory e-mail captioned, The Rise of Jihad in the\u00a0 land of Hind was circulated on July 26, 2008, by the Indian Mujahideen shortly before the serial\u00a0 bomb blasts in Ahmedabad. In addition to hurling filthy abuses on Hindu Gods and Godesses, the said e-mail threatened specifically \u00a0to avenge\u00a0 the alleged atrocities committed against\u00a0 SIMI, the mysterious darling of\u00a0 the Great Editor.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In the circumstances, it is difficult to guess what motivated Tejpal to mount a three months long \u00a0expensive campaign\u00a0 to defend SIMI has remained an unraveled mystery.\u00a0 Was it done free, or was it caused by the virus called \u201cPaid News\u201d afflicting several secular scribes across India?\u00a0 No wonder, \u00a0in the year 2008 there were hush-hush rumours in Lutyen\u2019s garden city guessing the source of\u00a0 money spent by Tehelka<\/i> in defending SIMI at a time when jihadi bomb blasts\u00a0 all around were causing death and destruction.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prima facie<\/i> the Great Editor of yesteryears was more\u00a0 bothered about\u00a0 the civil\u00a0 rights of the bombers of SIMI and Indian Mujahideen than the lives of innocent Indian citizens who were being incessantly slaughtered by the\u00a0 two radical\u00a0 Islamic outfits.\u00a0 No intelligence agency, however, \u00a0dare question Tarun Tejpal because of his high- profile political connections, including \u00a0the rumour about his easy\u00a0 access to 10 Janpath !<\/p>\n
After reading the difficult-to-put-down tome, The Seige,<\/i> authored by Adrian Levy and\u00a0 Cathy Scott Clarke, I see a message in the boast of\u00a0 ISI\u2019s Major Iqbal that\u00a0 they have a \u00a0double agent code-named Honey Bee and a number of Chuhe<\/i> (i.e., the mice) operating in India.\u00a0 As a result of Major Iqbal\u2019s revelation several questions have cropped up in my inquisitive mind. \u00a0I am listing below some of my serious concerns :<\/p>\n
i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who is the Honey Bee on whom our intelligence agencies like Intelligence Bureau and RAW \u00a0cannot lay hands?<\/p>\n
ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who all could be Major Iqbal\u2019s Chuhe<\/i>, or mice, nibbling at the tattered fabric of India\u2019s unity and integrity ?<\/p>\n
iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How is that our Intelligence Bureau cannot identify and locate the Honey Bee and the ISI\u2019s \u00a0Chuhe?<\/i><\/p>\n
iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is there any resemblance between David Headley\u2019s pre-26\/11 \u00a0recee of \u00a0Mumbai and the recent visit \u00a0and reccee of \u00a0Mullah \u00a0Zaeef \u00a0to \u00a0Goa.<\/p>\n
v)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Whom all did Mullah Zaeef meet during his hurried trip to Goa? \u00a0The Talibani Mullah is a very combative and and complex strategeist.<\/p>\n
vi)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is our tourist-paradise city of Goa, vulnerably located on Konkan coast, \u00a0slated to be targeted next time the way Mumbai was targeted in November, 2008?\u00a0 Goa could even face the butchery and vandalism in the manner\u00a0 and on a scale showcased by \u00a0the Al Shabab\u2019s commandos \u00a0at Westcoast Mall in\u00a0 Nairobi on September 27, 2013?<\/p>\n
Being a retired police officer I often feel concerned about the next jihadi strike across my motherland.\u00a0 Perhaps time has come to view with extra caution the visit of \u00a0Talibani Mullah Zaeef\u00a0 to\u00a0 Goa on the pretext of joining the Think-2013 glitterati\u00a0 and his close association with Tejpal.<\/p>\n
