ybp to the <a title=\"Acheulean\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acheulean\">Acheulean<\/a> period.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Humans and the Toba catastrophe<\/h2>\n<p>It has been hypothesized that the <a title=\"Toba catastrophe theory\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toba_catastrophe_theory\">Toba supereruption<\/a> about 74,000 years ago destroyed much of India&#8217;s central forests, covering it with a layer of volcanic ash, and may have brought humans worldwide to a state of near-extinction by suddenly plunging the planet into an ice-age that could have lasted for up to 1,800 years.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sciencedaily2009hds_4-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-sciencedaily2009hds-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> If true, this may &#8220;<i>explain the apparent <a title=\"Population bottleneck\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Population_bottleneck\">bottleneck in human populations<\/a> that geneticists believe occurred between 50,000 and 100,000 years ago<\/i>&#8221; and the relative &#8220;<i>lack of genetic diversity among humans alive today<\/i>.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-sciencedaily2009hds_4-1\"><a &#8220;<i>specifically blanketed the Indian subcontinent in a deep layer of ash<\/i>,&#8221; it was &#8220;<i>difficult to see how India&#8217;s first colonists could have survived this greatest of published in 2009 by a team led by Michael Petraglia of the <a title=\"University of Oxford\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Oxford\">University of Oxford<\/a> suggested that some humans may have survived the hypothesized catastrophe on the Indian mainland. These were specific <a title=\"Human mitochondrial genetics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_mitochondrial_genetics\">mtDNA<\/a> mutations that are shared exclusively by Australian aborigines and these Indian tribes, and no other known human groupings.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bmc2009ksg_11-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-bmc2009ksg-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Hypothesized Australoid migrations<\/h2>\n<p>Some anthropologists theorize that the original Negrito settlers of India were displaced by invading <a title=\"Austroasiatic languages\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austroasiatic_languages\">Austroasiatic-speaking<\/a> <a title=\"Australoid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australoid\">Australoid<\/a> people (who largely shared skin pigmentation and physiognomy with the Negritos, but had straight rather than kinky hair), and adivasi tribes such as the <a title=\"Irulas\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irulas\">Irulas<\/a> trace their origins to that displacement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-zvelebil1982_12-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-zvelebil1982-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-fuchs1974_13-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-fuchs1974-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup> The <a title=\"Oraon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oraon\">Oraon<\/a> adivasi tribe of eastern India and the <a title=\"Korku people\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korku_people\">Korku tribe<\/a> of western India are considered to be examples of groups of Australoid origin.<sup id=\"cite_ref-neeta2004_14-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-neeta2004-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-saha1987_15-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-saha1987-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Caucasoid and Mongoloid migrations<\/h2>\n<p>Subsequent to the Australoids, some anthropologists and geneticists theorize that <a title=\"Caucasoid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caucasoid\">Caucasoids<\/a> (including both <a title=\"Elamo-Dravidian languages\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elamo-Dravidian_languages\">Elamo-Dravidians<\/a> and <a title=\"Indo-Aryans\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indo-Aryans\">Indo-Aryans<\/a>) and <a title=\"Mongoloid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mongoloid\">Mongoloids<\/a> (<a title=\"Sino-Tibetan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sino-Tibetan\">Sino-Tibetans<\/a>) immigrated into India: the Elamo-Dravidians (called such, so as to distinguish them from the modern <a title=\"Dravidian peoples\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dravidian_peoples\">Dravidian<\/a> populations of India, which are of predominantly Australoid racial stock) possibly from <a title=\"Iran\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iran\">Iran<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-tls1963_16-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-tls1963-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-mukherjee2001_17-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-mukherjee2001-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-kumar2004_18-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-kumar2004-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup> the Indo-Aryans possibly from the <a title=\"Central Asia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Asia\">Central Asian<\/a> <a title=\"Steppes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steppes\">steppes<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-mukherjee2001_17-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-mukherjee2001-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-allchin1995_19-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-allchin1995-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-kulke1998_20-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-kulke1998-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup> and the Tibeto-Burmans possibly from the Himalayan and north-eastern borders of the subcontinent.<sup id=\"cite_ref-cordaux2004_21-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-cordaux2004-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>None of these hypotheses is free from debate and disagreement. In particular, the caucasoid feature of Indians have been explained by Disotell.<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup> This is the authors conclusion, &#8220;The supposed Aryan invasion of India 3,000\u20134,000 years before present therefore did not make a major splash in the Indian gene pool. This is especially counter-indicated by the presence of equal, though very low, frequencies of the western Eurasian mtDNA types in both southern and northern India. Thus, the \u2018caucasoid\u2019 features of south Asians may best be considered \u2018pre-caucasoid\u2019\u2014 that is, part of a diverse north or north east African gene pool that yielded separate origins for western Eurasian and southern Asian populations over 50,000 years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Crossovers in languages and ethnicity<\/h2>\n<p>While people of predominantly Caucasoid racial origin generally speak Indo-Aryan languages and people of predominantly Australoid racial origin generally speak Dravidian languages,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Reich2009_23-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_India#cite_note-Reich2009-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup> it nevertheless remains true that ethnic origins and linguistic affiliations in India sometimes do not correspond.
