From America\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to Australia in Under 6 Hours<\/h2>\n

Just 100 years ago,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 getting from America to Europe was a voyage that took several days by\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ocean liners. With the invention of airplanes, that travel time was\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 significantly shortened to under 24 hours. At the apex of the era of transatlantic flight,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Concorde was able to fly 100 passengers at mach 2.0 speeds from New\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 York to London in just over 3.5 hours.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Now, the European Space Agency (ESA) just\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 greenlighted the next stage of modern transportation \u2013 the hypersonic\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 flight. The ESA has approved a new round of funding to project LAPCAT\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Technologies).<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Ignoring its funny name, the new plane will fly at\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mach 5.0 speeds (that\u2019s five times the speed of sound!), using liquid\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hydrogen engines. The planes will be able to travel from England to\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Australia in four hours, carry 300 passengers and even fly to space in\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 just 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

The new kind of engine is being developed by the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 British company Reaction Engines, who is said to invest over 60 million\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 GBP in the development, and are going to start builing a full-scale\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 prototype engine.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Current jet engines require that airplanes carry\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 liquid oxygen as a coolant because in speeds beyond mach 3.0 the engines\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cannot use external oxygen for cooling. The new type of engine can use\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 external oxygen freely, allowing it to cool down its engines from over\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1,000\u00b0c (1,832\u00b0f) to -150\u00b0c (-328\u00b0f) in a fraction of a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 second.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Experts are hailing this development as the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 biggest advancement in aviation since the invention of the jet engine. The\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cost of a single plane is estimated to be a whopping $1.1 Billion and will\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have no windows.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
