\"RCAcharya\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0PM\u2019s laudable initiative to \u2018Make in India\u2019 in order to provide jobs for millions of unemployed youth whose ranks are swelling at an unbelievable rate of one\u00a0 millon very year has been the \u2018mantra\u2019 which Railways had already adopted\u00a0 over last 6 decades\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

.<\/span>Since late 19<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> century,<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>a 5% return on their investment guranteed by<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>the then government in power had spurred more than a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>dozen companies, all incorporated in UK, to set up shop to <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>build Railways in India, resulting in a<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>62,000 kms<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>network of steel <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by the time Inida attained independence. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understandably it was the British industries which were the main benificiary, with order books full supplying steel rails, locomotives, coaches, wagons, signalling system and all that went into running<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>a full fledged Railway. Fortunately at the inception itself <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Broad\u2019 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gauge, wider than the U.K.\u2019s \u2018Standard\u2019 gauge was adopted to provide stability to withstand <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>India\u2019s monsoon gale force winds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This proved to be a blessing in diguise providing a much higher level of throughput. For instance the suburban trains in Mumbai <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are a good metre wider with each coach capable of carrying nearly 4500 passengers<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>as against only 1500 in a DMRC metro coach.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after independence <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>government lost no time in setting up <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a steam locomotive manufacturing facility<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>at Mihijam in 1950, the first of a series of such<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>facilities to make in India all the major items of hardware required by Railways.\"CLW<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A brain child of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Nehru and Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>of West Bengal who made available vast tracts<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>non-arable land for the project,<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>it provided <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>jobs to thousands of refugees who had streamed across the border during the partition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This first collaborative venture in 1950<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>with North British Locomotive of UK was soon followed in 1955 by one with Swiss Car &<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Elevator Manufacturing Co., to manufacture Railway Coaches at<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu,<\/span>\u00a0\"ICF<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\"modi<\/a><\/span>in 1961 with American Locomotive Company (ALCO)<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>of U.S.A. to manufacture Diesel Locomotives at DLW (Diesel Locomotive Works) at<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Varanasi, UP.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second plant viz. RCF (Rail<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Coach Factory) came up at Kapurthala in 1984, to manufacture high speed coaches in collaboration with Linke Hoffman Busch<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>of West Germany. \"double<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"WHEEL<\/a>In order to meet the growing needs for wheels and axles, a<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>WAF (Wheel Axle Factory) was set up at Yellahanka, Bengaluru in collaboration with Amsted<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Industries of U.S.A. in 1984, while DMW (Diesel Maintenance<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Works) built in 1982<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>at Patiala, Punjab, manufactures spares for the growing<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>fleet<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Diesel locomotives, and similar one for Electric locos has recently been commissioned at Dankuni, in West Bengal. RSK (Rail Spring Karkhana) set up in 1986, at Sithouli near Gwalior<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>with West German aid (KFW), to manufacture coil springs for the wagon and passenger<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>coach bogies completes the list of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>8 Production units.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"diesel<\/a>This initiative for \u2018Make in India\u2019 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has provided <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an opportunity to India\u2019s giants in the Public sector viz. BHEL, SAIL, and private sector big guns such<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Kirloskars,<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Tata Timken,<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>NEI, ABB , Siemens, Mukand etc. to enter in a long term partnership with Railways to sustain its growth all the while<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>saving the nation billons of dollars in foreign exchange by keeping imports at a minimal level.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from meeting thc needs of Railways these facilties have also been busy exporting earning precious foreign exchange with<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>ICF setting the pace. It<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>sent first such consignment of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>47 Bogies to Thailand in 1967 and since then in all 361 bogies and 447 coaches have been exported to 13 Afro-Asian countries. The last order for Srilanka was for a whopping Rs.120 cores for supplying<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>20 rakes of 6 broad gauge coach DEMUs ( Diesel Multiple Units ) for the commuter traffic around Colombo. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a fully computerised Design & Development Cell equipped with<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>state-of-the-art computer designing facilities and testing equipment, both for coach components and raw materials, strain gauge testing and squeeze test procedures for prototypes before commencement of series production, and a<\/span> “ISO.9001” certificate for its quality systems from M\/s. TUV, Germany to boot,<\/span> ICF is also poised to enter<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>the export market in a big way !<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) , Varanasi equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and sophisticated design and proto-type testing capabilities, has also been in the export business for the last 4 decades chalking up quite<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>a few success stories against stiff global<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>competition. Located in PM\u2019s own constituency it has a unique opportunity to be Railway\u2019s flag bearer in making a major impact in India\u2019s export drive and place Varanasi firmly on World\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Rail Technology map. \"ICF\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting with a modest order for 15 of 1350 hp YDM4 type Meter Gauge locomotives for Tanzania executed<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>through RITES ( Rail India Techno-Economic Services ) an in-house consultancy arm in 1975, it has supplied 137 locomotives so far<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>to no less than 11 Afro-Asian countries,<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>the last order of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>26 nos. of 3100 hp Broad gauge locomotives being to Bangladesh in 2012-14.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Latest in the series of \u2018Make in India\u2019 initiatives have been a plant set up at Rae-Barielly in UP at a cost of Rs.1500 crorers for making 500 LHB coaches a year. Ingurated in 2012 it has already reached an utput of 140 coaches in 2014-15. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A fully automated <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Rail Wheel Plant<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>plant at Bela, Chapra, Bihar, duplicating the facility at Yellahanka of<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Bengaluru, celebrated its first foundation day on 1<\/span>st<\/span><\/sup> Aug 2014. Trial production commenced<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>in Dec 2012 and over 2000 wheel sets have been dispatched till date. Spread over about 300 acres it was built at a cost of about Rs. 1500 crores by L&T as a EPC contract and <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>has a capacity of churning out 100,000 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wheels discs annually. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Suresh Pabhu\u2019s prgamatic leadership, Railways is now engaged in the process of setting up two more facilities, one for 1000 Electric locomotives at Madhepura and another for<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>1000 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>high horse power Diesel locomotives at Marhorwa, both to be supplied over next 10 years, under FDI (Foreign Direct<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Investment) giving a major boost to Narendra Modi\u2019s\u00a0Made In India Plans.<\/span><\/p>\n
