they\u2019re living the high life.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the share of total U.S. income held by the rich and upper middle class in America hit 63%, compared with just 30% in 1979, <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/the-decades-long-post-war-growth-of-americas-middle-class-is-at-an-end-2016-07-20\">according to a report<\/a> released in June by the social and economic policy firm the Urban Institute<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread sm-screen\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-label\">ADVERTISING<\/div>\n<div id=\"teads0\" class=\"teads-player\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-credits\"><a href=\"http:\/\/inread-experience.teads.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"teads-ui-components-credits-colored\"><span style=\"color: #79bbe9;\">inRead<\/span><\/span> invented by Teads<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And when you just look at the rich, the data shows a similar pattern: The share of the total U.S. income held by upper income households hit 49% in 2014, up from just 29% in 1970, according to data from the <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2015\/12\/09\/the-american-middle-class-is-losing-ground\/\" target=\"_new\">Pew Research Center<\/a> released in December 2015. Upper income households are defined as earning more than $145,000 a year for a family of four. What\u2019s more, over the past 30 years, the wealth \u2014 total assets minus debts owed \u2014 of upper-income families has doubled, <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2015\/12\/09\/the-american-middle-class-is-losing-ground\/\" target=\"_new\">now topping $650,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even as the rich have gotten richer, plenty of them don\u2019t act like it. \u201cRich people don\u2019t get rich by spending it all,\u201d says Pam Danziger, a researcher focused on the affluent market and founder of <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/unitymarketingonline.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Unity Marketing<\/a>, which helps brands better connect with affluent consumers. \u201cThey know better than anyone that by being careful shoppers they can achieve a lifestyle several rungs up the income ladder.\u201d<iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/2\/marketwatch.com\/spendingsaving_story_2__hidden__\" title=\"\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/2\/marketwatch.com\/spendingsaving_story_2__hidden__\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There are myriad reasons that many affluent people are, well, cheap. Some of them are self-made and have spent many years before they were rich being thrifty. \u201cThriftiness is habit-forming,\u201d says Scott Tucker, the president and founder of financial firm <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotttuckersolutions.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Scott Tucker Solutions<\/a> in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Others fear that their wealth isn\u2019t permanent, so they don\u2019t spend a lot of their money. This is particularly true of the top 10% of the income spectrum, according to the 2015 Survey of Affluence and Wealth by research and polling firm YouGov. \u201cThe resourcefulness, financial independence and spending constraints that arose from the fear of the recession are now enduring attitudes of family financial management,\u201d the study authors write.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-realtor-ad-content\" class=\"ad module \" data-conditions=\"18\" data-proximic=\"true\" data-name=\"Realtor Ad Content\" data-google-query-id=\"CKLZyfz0w9ACFdOOjwodaCoCng\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/2\/moveinc.marketwatch.com\/personalfinance_articles_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<p><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/2\/moveinc.marketwatch.com\/personalfinance_articles_0__hidden__\" title=\"\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/2\/moveinc.marketwatch.com\/personalfinance_articles_0__hidden__\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the recession, like many Americans \u201cfear drove them to step up their savings, cut spending, and retool their household budgets, and to become more resourceful and independent when evaluating and making significant purchases. Over time, panic has given way to confidently applying these practices to their purchasing habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, rich people spend a ton. Last year, the affluent upped their spending by 6.6% on luxury goods \u2014 largely driven by increased spending on travel, dining out, home entertainment and cars, YouGov found.<\/p>\n<p>Still, many of them are very thrifty. Here are five stats that prove that:<\/p>\n<p><strong>They tool around town in a Ford<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are plenty of loaded Americans driving BMWs, but many drive far more modest cars. Data released in August 2016 <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/\" target=\"_new\">by car site Edmunds.com<\/a> found that the most popular car among those with incomes above $250,000 a year was the Ford F-Series, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Wranger; the Lexus RX and BMW X5 were only the No. 4 and No. 5 on the list. \u201cThere will always be an interest in and market for high-end exotic vehicles,\u201d says Edmunds.com executive director of industry analysis Jessica Caldwell. \u201cBut, overall, most of the wealthiest Americans look for their vehicles to perform the same kind of functional tasks that everyone else does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other studies show a similar penchant for modest cars among the wealthy: Among the top 10 most popular vehicles in America\u2019s wealthiest neighborhoods, half are nonluxury vehicles, an analysis of car-buying habits of residents of the 10 wealthiest zip codes in America by TrueCar.com found. These include the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Jetta and Toyota Prius.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll find them in the aisles of Wal-Mart &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One in three people with a net worth of more than $5 million says they shop at Wal-Mart <span class=\"quote bgQuote up\" data-channel=\"\/quotes\/zigman\/245476\/composite\" data-bgformat=\"\"><a class=\"qt-chip trackable\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/wmt?mod=MW_story_quote\" data-fancyid=\"XNYSStockWMT\" data-track-mod=\"MW_story_quote\">WMT, <span class=\"bgPercentChange\">+0.49%<\/span><\/a><\/span> \u00a0, according to a survey of 1,200 ultra-high-net-worth investors released in 2014 by financial information site <a class=\"icon \" href=\"http:\/\/millionairecorner.com\/\" target=\"_new\">Millionaire Corner<\/a>. What\u2019s more, nearly half say they shop at Costco <span class=\"quote down bgQuote\" data-channel=\"\/quotes\/zigman\/67728\/composite\" data-bgformat=\"\"><a class=\"qt-chip trackable\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/cost?mod=MW_story_quote\" data-fancyid=\"XNASStockCOST\" data-track-mod=\"MW_story_quote\">COST, <span class=\"bgPercentChange\">-0.70%<\/span><\/a><\/span> \u00a0 and more than four in 10 at Target.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026. And dropping coin at the dollar store<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many dollar store shoppers make $100,000 a year or more, data released by research firm NPD Group in July found. \u201cConsidering that nearly one in five dollars spent there is contributed by the affluent, dollar stores\u2019 value proposition clearly resonates across economic segments,\u201d says Andy Mantis, executive vice president of Checkout Tracking, a division of NPD. The average wealthy dollar store shopper makes about one trip a month to those stores, the data showed (though, to be fair, lower income people do make more frequent trips).<\/p>\n<p><strong>They clip a lot of coupons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Millionaire actress Kristen Bell says she\u2019s an avid couponer. Her favorite: the Bed Bath and Beyond Coupon. And she\u2019s not the only rich person to do so. People making over $100,000 were actually more likely than those making less to use coupons, a survey of more than 8,000 shoppers released in 2010 by deal site Deals.com found.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, one in four people who often use six or more coupons during each shopping trip were affluent, reporting incomes of $75,000 or more, according to research released in 2011 by the University of Arizona\u2019s John Davis Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences.
