How China’s Selfish Over Ambitiousness Under Xi Jinping Has Harmed BRICS and Emergence of A New Global Order

A rising China forgot on becoming an economic giant that its rise was as much a gift of United States , timing of globalisation drive and WTO as it was by its own pragmatic economic policies and disciplined hard working population. The greatest credit goes to Deng Xiaoping who had the courage to reverse the Maoist China’s communist policies and opened up China to world in his eleven year rule from 1978 to 1989. His successors Ziang Zemin and Hu Zin Tao silently worked and made super power that it became in 2012 when after ten year rule he vacated seat for Xi Jin Ping . In 2012 China’s GDP was $ 8.5 Trillion compared to $ 13.5 trillion of USA . On PPP basis the gap between USA and China was only 2 trillion dollars . So really China’s silent and non threatening stance was the key to its economic success.

Xi Jin Ping took over in 2012 and his authoritarian tendencies were getting noticed immediately . China was already the world’s fastest growing major economy. His over ambitious nature made him seek encashment of its economic and military power in usurping first the entire South China Sea by an assumed and laughable 9 – dash line .
He made artificial islands in South China sea and militarised them . He drove Taiwan to seek US help at any price. On Mekong river which flows through five countries and discharges in Vietnam. China has made six dams thus endangering the water supply to crucial lower riparian countries if they do not follow Chinese commands. It repeated it by its Three Gorges dam on Brahmputra river thus threatening India and Bangladesh .
He used China’s enormous money in bribing leaders of smaller countries and gave them huge loans for uneconomic projects suiting only Chinese interests . Ultimately it took over those vital assets like Hambantota port in Sri Lanka and Gwadar port in Pakistan . Hambantota port and Road from Gwadar to China has no use for the debtor nations . Many African and Asian countries got trapped in this choking debt trap.
It opened a new front by attacking Vietnam over Parcel islands and Philippines over Spartly islands . The real dispute is over the ocean wealth in South and East China sea. Similarly it attacked India in Doklam and Galwan valley thus shattering the excellent relations prime minister Modi was trying to forge with China .
Essentially China wanted to browbeat every country in the region as it was inevitably rising to become worlds number one economy.
This is when the worm decided to turn . Philippine went to International court and won . India joined QUAD . Japan under Shinzo Abbe gave up its unilateral pacifism . Vietnam had already given China a drubbing in 1979 war but its navy is weak and cannot match Chinese might at present . But Vietnam also consequently joined the US band wagon . Europe and Canada crumbled to Trump. Britain and Australia joined AUKUS .
China’s conduct during Covid was disgraceful. Millions died all over the world due to this leaked laboratory virus in Wuhan . The world economy sank for three years and has just recovered . China became an universally acknowledged international villain after COVID .
Before Covid and 9 dash line fiasco , world was at unease by unilateral economic sanctions of USA and EU . America under Trump destroyed the carefully negotiated international treaties without any reason . Russian initiative of BRICS had started emerging as an initial seed of an alternative world order. Suddenly due to misplaced adventurism of Xi Jinping every one in Asia started looking for security and USA hegemony got re established with vengeance .
America is seeking economic destruction of Russia and it may succeed due to Xi’s megalomania . Next to go will be China unless it accepts American hegemony under Xi’s successor. Xi is no Mahatma Gandhi to own up his mistake and work to recreate the international confidence in China. Failure will make him more aggressive . He will ultimately lead China to Soviet Union’s fate after international isolation. Europe will not be able to sustain economic losses of Ukraine war and EU will break or become in effective .
Xi Jinping has caused a great damage to global south and reinforced Neo Colonialist forces. Global South should now re assess the situation and search for new alternatives to defeat the Neo Colonialism unleashed after Ukraine war as otherwise it will get trapped in a futile long drawn war to re establish American hegemony hidden under ‘ Democracy, Freedom or Human Rights’ jargon .
