Finally belying the false Indian hopes based on ‘ अब की बार ट्रम्प सरकार ‘ ( Trump Government This Time ) and ‘HowDi Modi’ meet in 2019 in USA followed by one in Ahmedabad , the reborn president Trump , took no time in putting recalcitrant India in place immediately after his re election in Jan’2025 . Yesterday’s announcement of twenty five percent duty with likely extra fines preceded by NATO . EU warnings and Senator Lindsay Graham’s anti India / China bill, only started a long felt resetting of Indo US relations, out of US frustration with India refusing to give soldiers or join military alliance with west in garb of QUAD. Support to Russia against Ukraine as settling old Bangladesh debt by India , further increased the western frustration .
India was not important immediately to USA in the year 2000 but it was seen as a potential worth cultivating by Clinton onwards by all US presidents particularly George Bush Jr. who gave us the Nuclear Deal .
India exported $86.51 billion to the US and imported $45.33 billion, maintaining a trade surplus of $41.18 billion. However, according to the think tank GTRI, the US runs a hiddden trade surplus of 35 to 40 billion dollars when factoring in earnings from education, digital services, financial activities, royalties etc .Read more at:

While USA is our top trading partner but India ranks tenth as a trading partner of USA . Also apart from $ 46 billion dollar trade surplus and gets about $20 billion as remittance from USA . President Trump feels that India is not grateful enough .
In old days countries like India, with per capita income of $ 3000 compared to $ 75000 OF USA ,were given supportive treatment by developed countries . But now it almost appears pre historic era with USA demanding its pound of flash in Shylock style .
There is yet another angle to the debate which was so well articulated by our EAM Jaishankar . Europe’s imports from Russia were about $ 36 billion in 2024 most of it being energy products . Turkey , a NATO country’s imports from Russia were about $58 billion in 2022 most of it being oil and gas . Why should NATO, a military alliance , threaten India only ?
It is really the beginning of Western Neo Colonialism and needs to be nipped politely but firmly in bud by large countries like India or China . It had to happen some day . Today India is better placed to face it . So India must repel it with full force without being offensive . Modi – Doval- Jaishankar team is fully capable of doing it . Government must be supported even if it means making some sacrifice for preserving our independence and Strategic autonomy.
