Understanding The Nepal Quagmire
Ramakant Tiwari
Recently I happened to attend a discussion meeting on Nepal where some important civil
society personalities like Dr. Sundar Mani Dixit, Ravit Kumar etc. from that
country were present. They were quite forthright in their assessment of Nepalese
crisis and some of their observations I would like to share with you all –
Nepalese are fiercely sovereign minded. They do not like to be treated /
described as “sub-Indians” !! This term I heard for the first time.
Fear
of being gobbled up like another Sikkim always looms large in every Nepalese
mind. They fear the size, might of and inevitable dependence on India. They
appealed to us to treat them discreetly !! As if we have been tormenting them
all these years !!
Agitating Madhesis are another source of worry for
them as they are originally Indians, may force dismemberment of Nepal
ultimately.
Nepalese never received respect and affection from India !!
Anti-Indian attitude is nationalism in Nepal and Madhesis are suspect. All
dailies are anti-Indian now under Communist influence.
PM Modi earned
tremendous goodwill and respect among Nepalese which they admittedly, frittered
away owing to Communists coming to power. Border blockade has been done by
Madhesis on Nepalese side of the border while their Leftist PM blames India for
the crisis and intransigence.
There are several pressure groups working
in Nepal who do not like PM Modi’s popularity in Nepal.
When Nepalese
Constitution was being drafted, Britain wrote official letters to all Nepalese
MPs to stick to secular nature with freedom to convert. Mercifully, conversions
are completely banned, cow has been declared national animal and Vikram Samvat
calender has been adopted owing to people’s pressure, despite Communist regime.
I guess, RAW may have played the final, decisive role under PM Modi’s
instructions.
Secularism has been defined as Sanatana Dharma / heritage
to be regarded as sacrosanct and protected officially.
Koiralas in Nepal
are like Nehru-Gandhi-Vadras in India !! Speaker of the House is an ex-Maoist
terrorist.
They regard Nepal King as Avatara of Bhagavan Vishnu and want
us to respect the family on those lines while Indian media had not been
respectful to the royal clan.
Reporting of recent quake and the
aftermath by Indian channels was derogatory and they strongly objected to that.
Almost 13,000 NGOs have been active in Nepal with all subversive agenda
of conversion and disruption. Nepal had always been a highly unstable country.
They confessed, India had been very generous with Nepal, all Nepalese are
Indian educated, own jobs and property in India, still abuse India. Nepalese
have been very ungrateful to India, they rued frankly.
Nepal has 13
entry-points with India while only 3 with China.
Long ago, Mao Tse Tung had
advised Nepalese PM BP Koirala to necessarily maintain excellent relations with
India as China is unable to support them due to logistical bottlenecks. So wise
of them which Nepalese Communists are now busy defying and antagonising India.
Nepalese Communist Govt. have been conducting themselves outrageously
and it is better for Nepalese / Madhesis to agitate to merge with India a la
Sikkim.
If for everything they have to depend on India, then why a separate
country in the name of Nepal ?
